It is known that alcohol dries skin. For this reason there is a small amount of alcohol in the skin toners for dry skin. As for the skin toners for oily skin, they contain more alcohol.
As a rule skin toners are used after the procedure of cleaning the skin either with soap or with some other cleanser. But skin toners may also be used during the day to remove dust or oil. Skin toners are very good to use before applying make-up. As they are pH balanced, they maintain the acid balance of the skin.
In spite of various claims against skin toners, they do not block pores. Actually there is hardly a cosmetic product that can fit the size of the pores. The matter is that the products irritate the skin and the swelling causes their blocking.
The most widely spread skin toners ingredients are natural ones. The most popular herbs are geranium, lemon, sage, burdock, honey, ivy, nettle and others. Scientists say that witch hazel usually dries the skin. That is why skin toners should contain such moisturizers as honey and Vitamin E.
The gentlest toning is offered by the toners with essential oils. Rose water is a good base for sensitive and dry skin, while witch hazel is preferable for the oily type of skin. Skin toners may be applied with cotton wool or sprayed directly on the face in case you want to refresh it.
It is worthy of note that there are a huge number of skin toners recipes that can be used for home-made toners.
One of the most common ingredients is herbal tea mixture. In order to prepare a toner, it is necessary to boil a cup of water with the mix of marigold, nettle tips or rosehip, chamomile, to add 2-3 drops of lavender or orange oil and to cool the mixture. If you have oily skin, you may add lemongrass or juniper. If your skin is dry add sandalwood or rose to the mixture.
Tomato juice can be used as a skin toner.
If you have normal skin, here are some recipes for you. You may prepare a skin toner based on the rose water. Just mix a half tablespoon of alum, about 50 mg of rose water and 100 mg of glycerine and store the mixture in the fridge. Another toner for normal skin is cucumber toner which possesses refreshing properties. It is necessary to liquidize a chopped small cucumber with about a half cup of yoghurt. After that put the mixture on the face for about 5-10 minutes and wash it away. If you want to use the remainder, you may store it in the fridge.
If you have dry skin, you are recommended to use a mint toner which prepared in the following way. Boil 2 handfuls of mint leaves with 100 gm of water. Besides, you may use this extract as an anti-perspirant if to dilute it in water. It is necessary to put 2 drops of it into a cup of distilled water to which it is also necessary to add half a teaspoon of alum. This toner, possessing refreshing properties, may also be used with cotton wool.
In case of having oily skin, specialists advise their patients to use alum and alcohol toner or honey and egg toner.
It is possible to conclude that all these toners are exactly the same you buy in the market. The difference is in colorful labels, high prices and chemicals which do harm to your skin. Besides, they also use various preservatives to maintain the toners. When you make skin toners at home, you know what ingredients they contain.
